The International Club King, DJ Camilo, was born Juan Camilo Sanchez in Queens, New York, to Colombian parents. Camilo was first introduced to the "art of turntables" at age 12.
Camilo began his career as a DJ while still in high school, where he began circulating his mixtapes and quickly gained a following amongst his friends and music lovers. In 1991 Camilo debuted his first mixtape "CAMILO Vol. 1" Encouraged by the response to Vol. 1, he began releasing mixtapes every month and quickly made a name for himself in the NYC club scene.
In 2001, Camilo got his big break, when he caught the attention of another legend of the club scene, Hot 97's DJ Enuff (best known as The Notorious B.I.G's official road DJ), and was invited to join the newly created dj-crew, The Heavy Hitters.
Shortly after, Camilo earned himself a spot on Hot 97’s roster, hosting his own Saturday night show called “Take It to the Streets.” The success of “Take It to the Streets” led to an additional show on Friday nights, appropriately titled “The Heavy Hitter Hour”, as well as occasionally filling in on the “Rush Hour” show for DJ Enuff.
Today, DJ Camilo hosts three shows on Hot 97, “The New at 2PM” Mondays – Fridays, “The New at 2AM” Mondays – Fridays and “The Heavy Hitter Hour” every Friday.
